New year, New you
With a new year, along comes the new year resolutions. Although, we all may have good intentions and 'plan' to drop a few pounds, the reality of it certainly can be daunting. Which is why I compiled a few tips for a healthy lifestyle. I'm not health expert of any sort, but I do live with a professional athlete who is always conscious of what we are eating. Since we've been living together for quite some time now, his eating habits have certainly rubbed off on me. So together, C & I compiled a list of tips that we thought might be helpful and a bit more realistic.
1. Plan out your meals: Grab a notebook and planner, this will help you organize your meal ideas. Write down your meals in your planner, this doesn't have to be in long detail but just a basic idea so you know what you'll be eating that day. After you decide on your meals, use the notebook to compile your grocery list. TIP: We get bored of food easily and tend to change our meals up every week. Once a week (typically on Saturdays), we brainstorm our dinners for the week, primarily by searching Pinterest. This not only saves time but it also saves money. Chances are that if you don't know what to make for dinner, you'll end up eating out. While that might be easier, it's not always the healthiest option. So the take away here is to write and plan out your meals.
2. Hydration: The key part to a healthy lifestyle (at least for me), has been hydrating. Luckily, I'm not a fan of soda, juices, or anything like that. I enjoy water, a lot. I give myself goals by using a Nalgene or a S'well bottle to track how much water I have drank. While I'm at work, I set goals (see below).
8:30am - 12pm / 1 Nalgene (32 oz.)
12pm - 4pm / 1 Nalgene (32 oz.)
4pm - 9pm / 1 Nalgene (32 oz.)
I prefer a Nalgene or S'well because they can hold a large amount of water. It makes it easy for me to track and meet my goals.
3. This or That: We all have our weaknesses, for me, it's french fries. Throw cheesy, ranch, bacon fries in front me and they will be gone in 5 minutes. I'm not going to tell you to stop eating what you want, but I am going to tell you to pick on or the other. For example, if you're going to Chick fil A, typically one gets a meal. The meals contain deep fried chicken and french fries. It's simple, pick one or the other. For me, I don't think eating clean 24/7 is always effective. So you eat clean for a few weeks to "get on track" and then you're back to your old eating habits. Give your tummy what in wants, but pick one or the other. Instead of fries, grab a fruit cup or side salad. And you will still feel satisfied.
4. Portion Control: This is something that I've recently learned about and adapted to. Just because a restuarant fills your entire plate does not mean you have to eat it all in one sitting. Pace yourself when you eat and drink lots of water! Water helps suppress your appetite, and no I'm not telling you to starve yourself. I'm simply stating that we all eat way more than our bodies even need. Learn the difference between when you're actually hungry vs. empty eating.
Now that you've gotten through just a few of my tips, please let me know if this is helpful. I stick to these simple rules and notice a difference in my body almost within a few days.
